You may have heard the Danish word Hygge (hoo-gah) recently as trendy travelers and bloggers let the world know about various lifestyle phenomena sweeping the globe. If you are like me, your first reaction to Hygge would have been 'how on Earth am I supposed to pronounce that word, and what is it?' I never would have guessed it was a philosophy for living.
Hygge, which has a rough literal translation of cosiness, means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. It is Danish philosophy, with an emphasis to understand the importance of simplicity, time to unwind and slowing down the pace of life. Its historical origins stem from the long and dark winters experienced by the Danes, where to combat the nature of those elements, they would take time to light candles and spend time with each other. Indeed, as you will hear in one of the linked videos, Hygge is as important a concept to the Danes as freedom is to Americans.
Maybe this is why the Danes are supposedly the happiest people on Earth? Certainly for us here at Lovesac, the concept of Hygge resonates strongly. Taking time out to relax, listen to people, unwind from the pressures of the everyday. Spending time with those who matter. Finding meaning and enjoyment in the simplest of things. These are concepts that mean something to us, and help to form part how we operate. We definitely think the Danes would rate Lovesac a 10/10 on the Hygge scale.
